City Human Settlements Committee conducts oversight visit to housing projects

Members of the City’s Human Settlements Portfolio Committee, including Chairperson Councillor Albert Ntsodo, visited several projects across the metro to check on progress.
The City’s Human Settlements Portfolio Committee conducted an oversight visit to various projects to check on their progress. Projects visited included:
- Gugulethu Infill Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing project
- Mfuleni Extension 1 Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme (UISP) Project
- Enkanini South UISP
‘The final two projects are part of the Managed Settlements Program (MSP), which is designed to respond to unlawful land occupation. This method focuses on gradually developing settlements, starting with providing secure land and basic services. The aim is to speed up housing development, allowing people to move into their homes more quickly than traditional housing projects would allow.
‘The MSP can work alongside existing government programs like the UISP, which allows it to be applied to undeveloped land where residents are given access to serviced plots. We are grateful for the opportunity to see this type of service delivery in action and thank all stakeholders for a fruitful oversight visit,’ said Councillor Ntsodo.
Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation. The City's political office bearers do not have access to nor do they have influence over the Register and its qualifying beneficiaries.
